If you’re interested in teaching your child a second language, most likely you are aware of the many benefits of being bilingual. There are lots of articles that discuss the many advantages of bilingualism. Learning to speak more than one language helps to:
- Sharpen the mind
- Improve multi-tasking abilities
- Strengthen listening and communication skills
- Develop strong problem solving skills
- Encourage positive behavioral and social skills
- Enable academic advantages in the future
- Open doors to more job opportunities
- Delay the onset of dementia and other symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease
Those are more than enough reasons for me to encourage my children to learn more than one language! For more info, here’s a cool whiteboard animation about the benefits of being bilingual. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZANBvuS_iDU
But also, like I said before, one of the main reasons I wanted to raise my kids to be bilingual is simply to enable them to communicate in Chinese with my parents, grandparents, in-laws, and other non-English speaking relatives. They can learn so much about their heritage and their family just by talking to them.
